Financial Literacy!

This morning room 10 had Financial Literacy session with Rachel. We talked about who we trusted to lend stuff to. I was part of a skit the Rachel asked us to do. Me, Voni, Baden and Alisi were chosen. Voni and I were partners and we did our skit. There were 2 skits, first skit was about actually being responsible and giving the stuff back on the right time, and skit 2 was about being irresponsible and giving it back broken and wrong time. We then focused on credit, bad credit. We talked about it and ways to get your credit back. Then she handed us fill in the black sheets and we done it, She gave us had out sheets, and that was the end of our session, she said she will be back on Friday.

Stardome Trip!

Glenbrae School's senior block visited stardome. Before we left to stardome, the whole senior block had Dance Fever. We had our session together because of the trip to stardome. After Dance Fever we boarded onto the bus, Room 7 and 8 had gone on 1 bus and Room 10 and 9 were seated on the other bus.

It took us a while to reach our destination, Stardome, but eventually we got there. First we all had our morning tea, then Room 7 and 8 went into Stardome first. While they went in my class room 10 and room 9 played outside to build time as room 7 and 8 were in there. We played on the park there, and on the field grass. We stayed outside for a long amount of time until Mrs Raj called us inside.

As we walked inside Stardome, it was very cool and dark, We walked past some cool pictures and displays on the walls. Mrs Raj then asked us students to please place our bags in the the cage. A man named Tim than introduced him self and he took us into the Space room. A whole lot of questions were asked by our students, to Tim. Tim was very smart and answered all our questions - well it's sort of his job to know everything about space.. right? - It went really well inside the space room, and everybody learn't a lot and at the same time had so much fun.

Next Tim said that we could have free time to look around at all the amazing displays. He gave us simple rules to follow and I think we all did great to follow them. Tim then came and opened a door to a room, we were going into the planetarium room to see the show. The show was very fascinating and I had learnt a lot about our galaxy.

I had so much fun at Stardome.

CAMP!

Arriving to school on Tuesday, 13 with all my luggage for camp was tiring, and exciting. Walking through the school gates I was so elevated to be finally going to camp for the first time. Everyone put their bags down in front of the school hall and went inside of the hall. Some of the teachers spoke and then the year 7 and 8 assembled to the bus. As we walked out of the hall we took our bags and put them under the bus. Then we walked onto the bus and were all seated.

The bus ride was very long it took us almost 6 hours to get to Waitangi, although we did take 3 stops so that makes sense. Our first stop was in Whangarei where we took a lunch break and played for a bit. We then were on our way, we drove for about an hour until we stopped in Ruapekapeka, Ruapekapeka is a pa, a maori battlefield with a shattered old cannon. In Ruapekapeka there are a lot of trenches there from when there was war. When we had enough time at Ruapekapeka we left. Our final stop was in Kawakawa where there is a beautiful bathroom there. Then we hopped on the bus and were on our way to Waitangi.

Looking outside of the window driving along Paihia, seeing the beautiful beaches. Once we reached our destination we all were jumping with joy. We all then ran out of the bus and were so excited. We then played on the massive field of waitangi which was awesome. Then we walked to the front of the marae and waited to be welcomed by a lady who took care of the wonderful marae. Once the lady gave a beautiful welcoming we took our shoes off and entered the marae. Then a man, Ti Tiki Wiko said a speech, he told us a bit about himself too. Then Mr Nath, a teacher from our school represented us by saying a few words in his language, Fijian. Once that was all done we walked to the Whare Kai - Kitchen - and they had prepared some snacks for us to eat.

The next day we all woke up happy. We had our breakfast and had gotten changed into our casual clothes. Once we all were finished getting ready we packed our lunch and assembled to the front of the maarae. Everyone was so excited to be going on an adventure to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Once all of us were ready we started to walk - because the treaty grounds weren't so far away from where we were staying -. Finally we reached our destination the treaty grounds. As we walked with a man who was our tour guide we saw a beautiful waka called the Ngatokimatawhaorua which the queen of England calls HMS - Her Majesty's Ship -. We were then welcomed by a lady and man. We then wandered around the place and saw amazing stuff. We visited the Busby Residence, and the Maori Meeting house across from it. I had learn’t a lot about the treaty of waitangi when we visited those awesome places. When we came back from the treaty grounds we had half an hour to play out of the field then have a shower, eat dinner then bed time.

On Friday we went Kayaking. We were all split up in two groups. 1 group was the first group to be going kayaking and the 2nd group was the group that was riding on the boat. I was in the 2nd group so I was on the boat. We went on the boat until we came too Haruru falls then swapped around. Group 1 went in the boat and group 2 went on the kayaks. Kayaking was very fun also very tiring. You had to yous a lot of muscle to row. My partner I went kayaking with was my friend Manuae. We flipped the boat numerous of times, but at the end of the day we got the hang of kayaking. It was a very fun experience and I wish to go back there one day. When we came back to the Marae we had done our daily routine and then headed off to bed.

Saturday morning we woke up bright and early, everyone was so sad because it was our last day there in Waitangi. We packed our clothes and then packed away our beds. Everybody helped to clean up the marae. Students were sent out to clean up the field of the marae. Everyone took the luggage and placed them on the ground next to the bus. Our bus driver then packed it into the bus while everyone was helping to clean. Then we got into the bus and were off.

Our journey back to Auckland had just began! On our way to Auckland we made 3 stops. On the bus our awesome bus driver had played the avatar movie so we could watch it on our way back home. Camp was a very fun and exciting journey for me. I had so much fun, and as Miss Elia said, camp was a trip of a lifetime for me.

                                                       THE END!

Technology Reflection.

We had technology at Tamaki College today. As usual the year 8 were with Mr Pineda in Graphics. Today in graphics we carried on some work we did last week Friday. Mr Pineda gave me a paper with a cut out box on it. I cut out some fruit designs and nutritious facts and stuck it onto my paper. Then I went to the light box and started tracing a cool boarder for my box. After a while Mr Pineda we noticed that Mr Piieda had played our Maniakalani movie. Then the bell went and we were off.

Kiwi Can Reflection

Today after morning tea room 10 had Kiwi Can in room 11 with Mr Numia and Miss Tuia. Our theme in Kiwi Can is respect. First we started off with our energiser. Our energiser was an instruction game. We were split up in groups of 4-5. One person from a group was a leader, there job was to go up get instructions and tell the group. After our energiser we talked about Respect and what it is. Next we finally did our activity. Our activity was ‘Human knot’. Mr Numia separated the class into 2 groups. Human knot was very fun. My team had untangled ourselves easily. But the other team took for ages to untangle. Finally we were finished. We finished our session off with GKQ. Mr Numia gave us our points and then we said goodbye and came back to room 10.

Maths Lesson.

Today we had a maths problem we had to solve. The maths problem was,

Marilyn needs to fertilise her front lawn. It measures 20m x 35m. Each bag of fertilise that she plans to use covers approximately 200m2. How many bags should she buy?

My strategy was, 20m x 35m = 700m.  In each bag = 200m2. So if you buy 4 bags that is 800m2. But you need 700. If you half on of the bags in the 4 bags. You will have 100. 100 + 600 = 700m. She needs 3 1/2 bags of fertilise to cover her front lawn.

Today I learn't how to solve it with new strategies. Like place value partitioning.

My Nature Poem.

Feel the breeze of the wind blowing my hair everywhere.
Looking around seeing the birds soar through the clouds.
Trees as tall as the sky tower.
Pigeons sitting on the roof top looking down at us.
100 bare skeletons stuck in the field.
Everything so silent, only the sound of nature I hear.
As we lay on the hard blue sea, looking at the sky.
I think, what a beautiful world this is.

Paint your life.

Life is like a piece of art,
It requires lots of heart.
Choose your paint and your brush,
Take your time, avoid the rush.
Before you paint, choose your theme,
Don't be afraid, to follow your dream.
It's alright, to make a mistake.
Your painting is real, it's not fake.
Look at your painting, don't be crying,
Begin again, keep on trying.
Your painting is never fully complete,

Enjoy the process, make sure it's sweet.

Room 10 opinions on child abuse.

In room 10 we have been studying child abuse. I have gathered students from room 10's opinion.
Here are some of the opinions by students in room 10.

Kyana -  CHILDREN SHOULD TALK TO SOMEONE THEY TRUST AND THEY SHOULD BE PUT IN FOSTER HOMES AND SIFS. PARENTS SHOULDN’T BE GIVING THEIR KIDS HIDINGS.

Alisi - PARENTS SHOULDN'T BE ABUSING THEIR CHILDREN. IF THE CHILDREN GET DISCIPLINE IT SHOULD ONLY BE A GROWLING. WHEN THE CHILDREN GROW UP, THEY MIGHT LEARN FROM WHAT THEIR PARENTS DID TO THEM AND DO IT TO THEIR OWN CHILDREN. PARENTS SHOULD BE SEPARATED FROM THEIR KIDS.

Brandon - I THINK IT IS BAD. BECAUSE IT AFFECTS THE BRAIN.

Manuae - I THINK IT’S PRETTY SAD BECAUSE SOMETIMES IT COULD LEAD TO DEATH.  PARENTS SHOULD NEVER LAY A HAND ON THEIR CHILDREN OR CHILD.

Dallas - I THINK CHILD ABUSE IS BAD BECAUSE YOU GET BAD HIDINGS FROM YOUR PARENTS.

James - I THINK IT’S BAD TO SMACK LITTLE KIDS AND GIVE THEM A SMACK FOR DOING WRONG THINGS. THEY SHOULD GET A BETTER DISCIPLINE THAN GETTING A HIDING.

Voni - THE GOVERNOR SHOULD MAKE UP A RULE TO SAY PARENTS SHOULD NOT ABUSE THEIR CHILDREN. NO. CHILD ABUSE IS BAD. IT’S BAD BECAUSE PARENTS THROW YOUNGER CHILDREN ACROSS THE ROOM.

Erina - I THINK IT’S BAD BECAUSE IF ONE PERSON DOES IT. THEN THE OTHER WILL FOLLOW AND IT WILL BE A CYCLE OF CHILD ABUSE.

Bono - IT IS DANGEROUS.

Fine - IT IS BAD TO HIT THE CHILDREN. BECAUSE THEY CAN GO TO HOSPITAL AND GET BRUISES ALL OVER THEIR BODIES.

Baden - IT’S VERY WRONG TO HIT YOUR CHILDREN. THE PARENTS SHOULD GET SENT TO JAIL.

Timote - CHILD ABUSE IS BAD. BECAUSE IT HURTS THE CHILDREN. BECAUSE CHILDREN COULD GO TO THE HOSPITAL FOR MAJOR INJURIES.

Ilalio - I THINK IT IS VERY WRONG. IT COULD LEAD TO DEATH AND MURDER.

Early childhood centre *Glenbrae kids*

Having the opportunity to go to the Early childhood centre and explore it was awesome. Meeting new children and communicating with them was very fun. In a group of 2, I was in a group with Tauola. We had 2 children in our group. Jay Jay & Logan. I had a lot of fun with them two. Reading books, playing with dinosaurs. They were quite shy in the beginning but once we got to know each other they were fun to communicate. Our time at the early childhood centre was amazing. I hope to go there again next time.

Motat Trip.

Arriving to our destination, MOTAT (Museum of Transportation and Technology) was crowded. Everyone hopped off the bus, smelling that awful gas from the bus. Feeling so excited.

Educator Katherine spoke to us as we arrived. All classes assembled in a little fale/hut. Room 10 then followed our educator Katherine to a room. The room we were in was filled with all sorts of communication stuff that would of been used in World War 1 or World War 2. Katherine then spoke to us about how that kind of technology was used back then. Katherine let us go around and touch the artifacts that were in the room.

Leaving the room in our 4 groups. I was put in a group with Miss Pierce. We wandered around Motat for a while. Going everywhere in Motat and learning about all the wonderful things. We came upon the Challenge Room, where we stopped and had a little play. The challenge room was very fun, all the activities we played was very exciting and educational at the same time.

Morning tea, and lunch time was well spent in the fale/hut. That was our time to chat and eat our lunch before we went off to discover more interesting things about Motat.

My favourite part, Out of the hole day in Motat would have to be the TRAM ride. The tram ride was very cool. We learnt were the Tram had originally came from Melbourne Australia. Riding in the tram was very awesome. We rode from Motat 1 all the way to Motat 2. The tram ride was a very awesome privilege we got.

Sadly our time at Motat was over. I had the most awesome time learning at Motat. I hope to go back there next time.

YEAR 8 OPEN DAY

Arriving to Tamaki College was scary. We waited in front of the tech block until Mr Moses led us to the Tamaki College Library to have free time before we had to assemble in the auditorium. It made me realise that I will soon be here next year and as more and more students from other intermediates appeared I got even more nervous.

All the year eights from Glenbrae and also other near intermediates were seated and we were then spoken to by a lady named Mrs Moore. Everyone was split into groups that had 2 student leaders from Tamaki College for each. I was put in a group named PEM and my leaders were John, head boy of Tamaki College and a year nine named Junior.

My first class was music with Mr Telefoni. We played games about different kinds of sounds. We had to create beats with different genres and using some of the instruments in the class. It was a really good experience in music and made me think of taking this class next year.

For the rest of the day I had more exciting classes such as Social Studies, Science, Maths and English. I also met teachers at Tamaki College that I will probably see again next year.

The Tamaki College Catering class provided us with morning tea and lunch. I also got to socialize with the other students from different schools and I hope that I see them again.

Year 8 open day was a great experience because I got a little understanding of what college is like. It made me realise that I will soon be here next year which frightens me but I am still so excited.

Men who fought in the war, and survived, talked and shared their experience. WW2 was started, by Germany attacking Poland. Britain and France had declared war on Germany, because Adolph Hitler, refused to abort his invasion on Poland.

When we finally arrived to Nana's house, My mum and Aunty, Dropped us kid's off while they went and looked for a present for our new born baby cousin, who was in hospital, (she was born yesterday).
Us children had stayed here with our grandpa's sister, Telema. We watched T.v, Played outside, well, we did whatever kid's do.

A few hours later, My Grandpa, and Nana had arrived, with a load of shopping. We all helped to bring it inside, and we worked as a team. After we had finished bringing it in, Mum and Aunty Moira showed up. They picked up my oldest sister's Anaise and Tatiana, to go to the hospital, to see the new baby.

Before, my mum and Aunty left, My mum reminded us kid's to get our clothes ready for tonight, Becuase tonight, were going to a "Hansel and Gretel" play.

3. 20 x 7 = 140
4. 20 x 7 = 140

Kiwi Can.

Last week Thursday, room 10 visited, Kiwi Can in room 11, after morning tea. Mrs Tofa, spoke to us before we entered room 11 and told us to try to be on our best behaviour, because it was the last session and we wanted to get the most points to earn the prize.

We walked into room 11 and we were seated in a big circle, we talked about our topic for the day and our topic was “Empathy”. Mr Numia went around and asked us what we thought Empathy was. Some people put their thumbs up, but then after they had finished, Miss Tuia, told us what it meant, It meant “ To feel sorry for someone”. We split up in 4 groups, and Mr Numia asked us to plan a skit, to show how we show empathy for someone, He went around and gave every group a paper that had what we were going to do, He gave us a paper which said, A friend broke her/his arm at lunch time, what can we do to show empathy, Taoula was the one who broke her arm, and everyone in the group had a part to play and showed empathy, When all was finished, we got back into our circle and had a game of GKQ (General Knowledge Questions), When we finished our GKQ, We were down to doing our points. Our total score for our points was 130. So we had one, every one in room 10 was filled with joy, and had smiles.

Brachiosaurus.

The brachiosaurus is a herbivore (plant eater) dinosaur. It feeds on plants and tops of tall tree. The brachiosaurus swallows it food whole, without chewing. The brachiosaurus digests its food in its guts.

A brachiosaurus is one of the most largest dinosaurs. It has 4 huge legs. A very long neck, but a tiny head, and a long tail. The brachiosaurus nose is on the very top of it head. It has chisel like teeth and its front legs are way bigger than its back. A brachiosaurus is supposedly 40-50 feet tall, it has a bulky body. The Brachiosaurus name means “arm reptile”.

The brachiosaurus lived way back in the late Jurassic period, It lived on this earth 156-145 million years ago, with other reptiles.

It lived in the in, North America and Tanzania in the USA. A few of the brachiosaurus fossils were found without the head.

The brachiosaurus defended itself by simply smashing its predators with it tail or feet because it had no other way to defend itself. The brachiosaurus weighed between 60,000 and 170,000 pounds, which means it was the largest dinosaur to ever live. Because of its huge size, it was very difficult for other prey or larger predators to attack, even though it was one of the most least intelligent dinosaurs.

MADD Workshop.

Today, we had MADD workshop. The topic we talked about was “ Talents and Skills”. Petia was the only one there, First Petia welcomed us and we started talking about Talents and Skills. We talked about famous people with lots of skills and talents, Like, Paris Global and SBW (Sonny Bill Williams), We talked about their talents, Like what they had to do get where they were, and do what they can do. Petia then showed us some quotes on paper, One of my favourite quotes I saw was “ NO is Knowledge” and “10,000 Hours”. I liked those quotes because, “ No is knowledge” really pushes people, to keep doing what they loved, and 10,000 hours, it took that many hours for the stars to make it, why can’t we?. He then sent us in groups. I was in a group with Fusi, Mata, Kyana, and Manuae. Petia told us to practice a skit/play and perform it in front of everyone. We all did our skits, Moses and his group did a skit about, playing rugby, the message there was, One boy did not train, but when it came to the real thing, he did not know what to do. Then it was our turn. We did a play that was about the quote “ No is knowledge”. We had Fusi audition for New Zealand got talent, and the rest of us were the judges, Fusi first came and was terrible, we said no, The year later Fusi came back and she was, well, the best. When we had finished, the other teams went, Petia said when we all finished, that our team was the best. Then Petia drew a chalk art and it was Wonder woman. I felt that session was really cool, and the quotes were very meaningful.

Term 1 at GBS

Term 1 of school has been a bumpy ride. Good stuff has happened, and so has some bad, and ugly stuff. The topic for this term was Dinosaurs. In term 1 Glenbrae school went on a journey to butterfly creek to learn more about our subject, dinosaurs. We had a great time at butterfly creek and learnt so much. We had came back from butterfly creek and put our information into presentations, so that we could share it with the world and our families.

Some students from Glenbrae School, were very lucky and got chosen to go on Saturday with teachers from Glenbrae to a cricket tournament at Eden Park. It was a match against, South Africa and Pakistan. South Africa was our second team that we were cheering for, after the Black Caps. We travelled by bus to Eden park, where we were dropped off, we had to take a 10 minute walk to get to the station we were supposed to be at. As we were walking, we were surrounded by people in light green t-shirts who were cheering for Pakistan, and others in dark green t-shirts, who were cheering for South Africa. When we had got to our places we sat down. That day was such a blast, some of us even lost our voices, cheering so loud, but at the end of the day we were all happy and so proud of South Africa, Even though we never won, South Africa did their best.

This term hasn’t been all that good, we’ve had some down parts at Glenbrae School, but this term has been o.k. This term the year 7 & 8 had technology at Tamaki College. It’s very useful at technology, because it teaches us how to make stuff. Tech at Tamaki college is awesome because it give us the opportunity to do some things that we are not able to do at our own school. We finish tech at 10:45, and we walk back to school, when we reach school, the bell rings and it is morning tea.

At Glenbrae, we have been doing a MADD (Music - Arts - Drama - Dynamics) Messenger program in term 1, This program has helped us through self confidence, and to believe in ourselves. One day in our MADD workshop there were quotes on the ground and every one had to go read one, and pick out their favourite. The quote that I had picked out was “ put your quote here “ I really liked that quote because, it really spoke to me, It told me to be glad with my failure, I have so much more times to get this right. I felt that it was telling me to be happy, even if I fail, failure is just another step in life. Every time we had the MADD work shop the guy, Petia, would always draw, a chalk art, he would draw a superhero, Superman, Iron man, Captain America.. and lots more. He drew the super heroes to inspire us

Term 1 we had been doing so much fun things, Water fun day, In the beginning of term 1 the whole of Glenbrae School had a water fun day. Kowhai (Yellow), Kauri (Green), Nikau (Blue), and Rata (Red) are our 4 houses. We all split up in our classes, and went to a station, there were stations all around the school, with fun activities, that involved water. Every house was all dolled up dressed in their beautiful house colours, I was dressed in yellow, cause Kowhai is my house. Each house, changed each other and had to collect an amount of water and fill up their bins. The house with the most water in it would be the winners, Eventually, everybody had done all the activities there was, so we gathered around and Mrs Tofa, called out the winners. At the end, we were all proud, even if we never came first.

Term 1 has been awesome, we did much more educational and fun stuff, I hope we can do even more in term 2 at GBS (Glenbrae School).

Our Culture

Today Wednesday 11th of March 2015 we, room 9 and 10 of Glenbrae School had Pitia and Leah (Caroline was out somewhere so Leah took over) visited us for MADD ( Music-Arts-Drama-Dynamics) messenger workshop. The topic we talked about by being proud of our culture and just being ourselves.

We were split into groups of our ethnicity like Tongans, Samoans, Cook Islanders, Maoris,Niueans, and Africans. I was in the Tongan group, because i’m a tongan. We sat in a circle and Leah came around and gave us a piece of paper and a pen. We had to answer questions like, What culture are you, What's your greeting and other things that important to our culture. When we answered the questions Pitia came and asked all of the groups if we could practice an item to show everyone that represents our culture. We practiced singing a song called Ta Koe Sola.

Then Pitia and Leah called all groups to come forward to the front of the hall.
We sat in a semicircle, first Petia called up south africa, Samuel was the only African so he stood up. When Samuel stood up and read his piece of paper I was very proud of him, because he had the courage to stand up and speak in front of everyone.  Then Petia called up the Niuean. They talked to us about their country and all sorts of gestures and traditional celebrations they do. Then the Niuean boys, Bono, Joseph and Justin did a very cool item which represented their island. Up next was Samoa, they said their part and did the siva tau, a Samoan item, then the cook Islands came up, They talked to us about some traditions about cook island, then, it was Tonga tapus turn. As we were walking up I felt a bit nervous, we walked up stood there and Alisi talked about our celebrations, and traditions that we have. We sang our song Ta koe sola and we were done. Next came the Tangata whenua/Maoris, they showed us what a hongi is and a pukana, which were all part of their culture.

We were finished, Petia talked to us about the meaning of that activity. When we're doing that activity I felt very proud about who I stood for, and what my culture is, I felt very confident about who I was and what culture I am in.  I was also very happy that I learnt about other cultures and what their traditions are. Then Petia did a chalk art for us and he drew Hulk. While he was drawing, a song named “don’t  forget your roots” came on, The song was very meaningful, because the lyrics told me not to forget where I come from and who I am.
When we were finished we went back to class. We really had lot of fun and we learnt about not only our culture but also the culture of others.

Cricket

This morning room 10 had our 3rd cricket lesson. Our cricket instructor was a guy named Matt. When we first got there we played a game of octopus. Ilalio was the tagger in our first game of octopus.  Then the first person got out was a tagger with him then the next. So then we had 3 taggers that could move and were the actual taggers. I was one of the last four standing, but then I was tagged by one of the taggers. We had another game of octopus and I got out earlier this time in this game.

Next Bono split room 10 into two groups. Group one, and Group two. I was in group one. Kyana from our team and Alisi from group two played rock, paper, scissors. Alisi won, she had gotten paper and Kyana got rock. So our team was fielding.

We were doing good fielding, and everyone who was batting were very good too. Some were really really good. Then the opposite team, Group one had finished batting. They finished with a total score of 20.

It was finally our turn to have a go with the bat. We all had our turn. It came to my turn I was very nervous. I took the bat and hit it Pewh I hit the ball it never went so far but I got there in time to take another hit. this hit I never got so Matt called out strike one. Then I took another hit and missed again. Matt called out strike two and I was out. I wasn't really embarrassed that I got out because everyone was very supportive against everyone. Then it was the rest of team on to have a go. When we had finished we finished with a total of 19 points, 1 point away from group twos. So we lost and team two had came first. Group two weren't all that mad. We were alright, but we would have been much happier if we won.
Today was very fun and we all worked as a team, and encourage everybody.
